Strong Normalization of Explicit Substitutions via Cut Elimination in Proof Nets (Extended Abstract)

چکیده
In this paper, we show the correspondence existing between normalization in calculi with explicit substitution and cut elimination in sequent calculus for Linear Logic, via Proof Nets. This correspondence allows us to prove that a typed version of the λx-calculus [30, 29] is strongly normalizing, as well as of all the calculi isomorphic to it such as λυ [24], λs [19], λd [21], and λf [11]. In order to achieve this result, we introduce a new notion of reduction in Proof Nets: this extended reduction is still confluent and strongly normalizing, and is of interest of its own, as it correspond to more identifications of proofs in Linear Logic that differ by inessential details. These results show that calculi with explicit substitutions are really an intermediate formalism between lambda calculus and proof nets, and suggest a completely new way to look at the problems still open in the field of explicit substitutions.

Strong Normalization of Explicit Substitutions via Cut Elimination in Proof Nets
In this paper, we show the correspondence existing between normalization in calculi with explicit substitution and cut elimination in sequent calculus for Linear Logic, via Proof Nets. This correspondence allows us to prove that a typed version of the λx-calculus [34, 5] is strongly normalizing, as well as of all the calculi that can be translated to it keeping normalization properties such as λ...
متن کاملProof Nets and Explicit Substitutions
We refine the simulation technique introduced in (Di Cosmo and Kesner 1997) to show strong normalization of λ-calculi with explicit substitutions via termination of cut elimination in proof nets (Girard 1987). We first propose a notion of equivalence relation for proof nets that extends the one in (Di Cosmo and Guerrini 1999), and we show that cut elimination modulo this equivalence relation is...
متن کاملLinear Logic and Strong Normalization
Strong normalization for linear logic requires elaborated rewriting techniques. In this paper we give a new presentation of MELL proof nets, without any commutative cut-elimination rule. We show how this feature induces a compact and simple proof of strong normalization, via reducibility candidates. It is the first proof of strong normalization for MELL which does not rely on any form of conflu...
متن کاملPattern Matching as Cut Elimination
We present a typed pattern calculus with explicit pattern matching and explicit substitutions, where both the typing rules and the reduction rules are modeled on the same logical proof system, namely Gentzen sequent calculus for minimal logic. Our calculus is inspired by the Curry-Howard Isomorphism, in the sense that types, both for patterns and terms, correspond to propositions, terms corresp...
متن کاملStrong Normalization of Herbelin's Explicit Substitution Calculus with Substitution Propagation
Herbelin presented (at CSL'94) a simple sequent calculus for minimal implicational logic, extensible to full rst-order intuitionistic logic, with a complete system of cut-reduction rules which is both con uent and strongly normalising. Some of the cut rules may be regarded as rules to construct explicit substitutions. He observed that the addition of a cut permutation rule, for propagation of s...
